Understanding Running Pace

Running pace is the foundation of smart training and race planning. Whether you are chasing a sub-30 minute 5K or your first marathon understanding pace helps you train at the right intensity and execute your race strategy perfectly.

Pace Formulas: Pace (min/km) = Total Time (min) ÷ Distance (km) Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ Time (hours) Finish Time = Pace (min/km) × Distance (km) Common Conversions: min/km to min/mile: multiply by 1.60934 min/mile to min/km: divide by 1.60934 km/h to mph: multiply by 0.621371 Race Time Examples at 6:00 min/km: 5K = 30:00 10K = 60:00 (1:00:00) Half = 2:06:35 Full = 4:13:11

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my running pace? +
Divide your total time by the distance covered. If you run 5 km in 30 minutes your pace is 30 ÷ 5 = 6 minutes per kilometre. To find pace in min/mile multiply min/km by 1.60934. Use our Pace Calculator tab above — enter your distance and time for instant results including race time predictions and splits.
What is a good running pace for beginners? +
A good beginner pace is one where you can hold a full conversation — typically 7 to 9 minutes per kilometre or 11 to 14 minutes per mile. This conversational pace builds your aerobic base safely. Most beginners complete a 5K in 35 to 45 minutes. Speed improves naturally with consistent training over several months — do not rush the process.
What pace do I need to run a sub-30 minute 5K? +
To run 5K in under 30 minutes you need to maintain faster than 6:00 min/km or 9:39 min/mile throughout the race. At exactly 6:00 min/km you finish in exactly 30:00. For a 28 minute 5K you need 5:36 min/km. Use our Finish Time calculator tab to find the exact pace needed for any 5K time goal.
How do I calculate my marathon finish time? +
Multiply your pace in min/km by 42.195 km. At 6:00 min/km: 6 × 42.195 = 253.17 minutes = 4 hours 13 minutes 10 seconds. At 5:41 min/km you finish in exactly 4 hours. Many runners estimate marathon time as their 10K time multiplied by 4.65. Use our Finish Time tab for instant accurate marathon predictions at any pace.
What is the difference between pace and speed? +
Pace is time per distance — minutes per km or mile. Speed is distance per time — km/h or mph. They measure the same thing from opposite directions. A 6:00 min/km pace equals 10 km/h speed. A 5:00 min/km pace equals 12 km/h. Runners use pace because it directly maps to race strategy — you know exactly when you will pass each kilometre marker.
What are good race times for common distances? +
For recreational runners good targets are: 5K in 25-35 minutes, 10K in 50-70 minutes, half marathon in 1:50 to 2:30, marathon in 4 to 5 hours. Elite runners run 5K under 14 minutes, 10K under 28 minutes, half under 1:00 and marathon under 2:10. The best target is one that is challenging but achievable for your current fitness level.
How do I use pace to plan race splits? +
Race splits divide your race into segments to help pace yourself evenly. For a 10K at 6:00 min/km your splits are: 5K mark at 30:00, finish at 60:00. Most experienced runners aim for negative splits — running the second half slightly faster. Our calculator generates full km-by-km splits for 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon at your target pace.
