How to Calculate Ideal Body Weight
There is no single perfect formula for ideal weight — different medical and research organizations use different methods. Our calculator shows results from all 5 major validated formulas so you get a complete picture of your healthy weight range rather than a single number that may not suit your body type.
The 5 Formulas We Use:
- Devine Formula (1974) — Most widely used in clinical settings. Men: 50 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. Women: 45.5 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet
- Robinson Formula (1983) — Refinement of Devine. Men: 52 + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet. Women: 49 + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet
- Miller Formula (1983) — Men: 56.2 + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet. Women: 53.1 + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet
- Hamwi Formula (1964) — Oldest formula still in use. Men: 48 + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 feet. Women: 45.5 + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 feet
- BMI Based Range — Healthy BMI of 18.5-24.9 converted to weight range for your height
Why Ideal Weight is a Range Not a Single Number
Body weight is influenced by muscle mass, bone density, body composition and frame size. Two people of the same height can have very different ideal weights depending on their build. This is why we show a range rather than one number — your ideal weight is the range within which you feel and perform your best while maintaining good health markers like blood pressure and blood sugar.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the ideal weight for my height? +
Ideal weight depends on your height, gender and frame size. For a 5ft 9in (175cm) male the healthy weight range is approximately 63-77 kg (139-170 lbs) based on a BMI of 18.5-24.9. Use our calculator above for your exact range based on all 5 validated medical formulas. Remember ideal weight is a range not a single number.
Is BMI the same as ideal weight? +
No — BMI and ideal weight are related but different. BMI is a ratio of weight to height squared used to screen for weight categories. Ideal weight is the specific weight range considered healthy for your height. A healthy BMI of 18.5-24.9 translates to a specific weight range which is one of the methods we include in our ideal weight calculation alongside four other validated medical formulas.
How do I know if I have a small, medium or large frame? +
Wrap your thumb and middle finger around your wrist. If they overlap you have a small frame. If they just touch you have a medium frame. If they do not touch you have a large frame. Alternatively measure your wrist circumference — for women under 5ft 2in: small under 5.5 inches, large over 5.75 inches. Frame size affects ideal weight by approximately 10% in either direction.
Which ideal weight formula is most accurate? +
No single formula is universally most accurate — each was developed for different purposes and populations. The Devine formula is most commonly used in clinical settings for medication dosing. The BMI-based range is most widely recognized by health organizations. Using the average across all 5 formulas as shown in our calculator gives you the most balanced estimate of your ideal weight range.
What if my weight is outside my ideal range? +
Being outside the ideal weight range does not necessarily mean you are unhealthy. Athletes and muscular individuals often weigh more than ideal weight charts suggest because muscle is denser than fat. Body composition — the ratio of fat to muscle — matters more than the number on the scale. If you are concerned about your weight consult a healthcare professional who can assess your overall health holistically.
