Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle
The menstrual cycle is a monthly process your body goes through to prepare for possible pregnancy. Understanding your cycle helps you plan ahead, track your health and recognize when something may be off.
The 4 Phases of Your Menstrual Cycle
- Menstruation (Days 1-5): The uterine lining sheds if no pregnancy occurred. This is your period. Day 1 is the first day of bleeding.
- Follicular Phase (Days 1-13): Overlaps with menstruation. The pituitary gland releases FSH stimulating follicle growth in the ovaries. Estrogen rises preparing the uterine lining.
- Ovulation (Day 14 in a 28-day cycle): A surge in LH hormone triggers the release of a mature egg. This is your most fertile day.
- Luteal Phase (Days 15-28): The corpus luteum produces progesterone. If no fertilization occurs hormone levels drop and menstruation begins again.
How to Track Your Cycle Accurately
For the most accurate predictions track your cycle for at least 3 months. Record the first day of each period and calculate the average cycle length. Cycles naturally vary by 1-3 days month to month — this is completely normal. If your cycle varies by more than 7 days consistently consult a healthcare provider.
Signs of Ovulation
- Clear stretchy cervical mucus resembling raw egg white
- Slight rise in basal body temperature of 0.2-0.5°C
- Mild one-sided pelvic pain called mittelschmerz
- Increased libido
- Breast tenderness
