When Should You Tip?

Tipping customs vary by country and service type. In the United States, tipping is standard practice at restaurants, bars, hair salons, taxis and delivery services. A standard tip ranges from 15% to 20% for restaurant service. For exceptional service, 25% or more is a generous gesture that servers greatly appreciate.

Splitting Bills Fairly

When splitting bills in a group, our calculator divides the total including tip equally among all people. For situations where people ordered different amounts, simply calculate the tip percentage separately and add it to each person's individual order total.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much tip should I leave at a restaurant? +
Standard restaurant tipping etiquette in the US is 15-20% for good service and 20-25% for excellent service. Many people use 20% as their default as it is easy to calculate and considered a fair standard tip. For poor service 10% is acceptable. For exceptional service 25% or more shows your appreciation. Always tip on the pre-tax amount of your bill.
Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount? +
Etiquette experts and most tipping guidelines recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal โ€” the cost of your food and drinks before tax is added. In practice the difference is small โ€” on a $100 bill with 8% tax tipping 20% on $100 versus $108 is only a $1.60 difference. Our tip calculator lets you choose either method so you can decide what feels right to you.
How do I split a bill evenly between friends? +
Enter the total bill amount in our tip calculator, select your tip percentage and enter the number of people splitting. The calculator instantly shows the tip amount, total bill with tip and the exact amount each person owes. For uneven splits where people ordered different amounts it is best to calculate individually or use a dedicated bill splitting app.
Who should I tip and how much? +
Common tipping guidelines in the US: Restaurants 15-20%, food delivery 10-15% (minimum $3-5), bartenders $1-2 per drink or 15-20%, hair stylists 15-20%, taxi/rideshare 10-20%, hotel housekeeping $2-5 per night, movers $20-50 per person, pizza delivery $3-5. Tipping customs vary significantly by country โ€” in Japan tipping is considered rude while in the US it is an important part of service workers' income.
How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly in my head? +
The easiest mental math method: move the decimal point one place left to get 10% of the bill, then double that number to get 20%. Example: on a $45 bill, 10% is $4.50, double it = $9.00 tip. For 15% take 10% ($4.50) and add half of that ($2.25) = $6.75. For odd amounts round up to the nearest $5 or $10 to make calculation easier.
