🌟 Your Optimal Sleep Times
Based on 90-minute sleep cycles — wake up at the end of a cycle to feel most refreshed.
🧠 The 4 Stages of Sleep — Why Cycles Matter
One complete sleep cycle takes approximately 90 minutes and includes all four stages. A full night of sleep consists of 5-6 complete cycles. Waking up at the end of a 90-minute cycle — rather than in the middle of deep sleep — is why you feel refreshed versus groggy.
How the Sleep Calculator Works
Our sleep calculator is based on the science of sleep cycles. Each sleep cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes and consists of four stages — three non-REM stages and one REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage. When you wake up in the middle of a deep sleep stage you feel groggy and disoriented — a feeling called sleep inertia.
By timing your alarm to coincide with the end of a complete 90-minute cycle you are much more likely to wake up naturally and feel refreshed — even if you get fewer total hours of sleep. Our calculator adds your average time to fall asleep to calculate the exact times your alarms should be set.
How Many Hours of Sleep Do You Need?
- Adults (18-64 years) — 7 to 9 hours per night recommended by the National Sleep Foundation
- Teenagers (14-17 years) — 8 to 10 hours per night
- School children (6-13 years) — 9 to 11 hours per night
- Older adults (65+) — 7 to 8 hours per night
- 5 complete sleep cycles = 7.5 hours — the sweet spot for most adults
- 6 complete sleep cycles = 9 hours — ideal for those needing more rest
Tips for Better Sleep Quality
- Keep a consistent sleep schedule — same bedtime and wake time every day including weekends
- Avoid screens for 30-60 minutes before bed — blue light suppresses melatonin production
- Keep your bedroom cool — optimal sleep temperature is 65-68°F (18-20°C)
- Avoid caffeine after 2 PM — caffeine has a half-life of 5-6 hours
- Exercise regularly but not within 3 hours of bedtime
- Create a relaxing pre-sleep routine — reading, light stretching or meditation
